Sustainability is taking centre stage in Banke Kuku’s latest collection, Oceans, as the internationally recognised fashion designer continues to weave her signature narrative through fashion. Known for her vibrant designs and rich storytelling, Banke Kuku, affectionately referred to as Printess Banke, has set out to use fashion as a force for good, bringing attention to environmental issues—particularly the need to protect our oceans.
Following the success of her nature-inspired Eden collection in 2023, which was an ode to the beauty of Earth’s flora, Oceans delves deeper into nature, this time drawing on the breathtaking yet fragile marine ecosystem. The collection, which features marine-inspired prints of coral reefs, sea shells, and even shrimps, is designed to evoke admiration for the sea’s beauty and a pressing awareness of the need for its preservation.
“With Oceans, I wanted to bring attention to the vast beauty of our marine ecosystems and the urgent need for their protection. Our oceans are vital to life on Earth, and through fashion, I hope to spark a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the natural world,” Banke Kuku said during an exclusive press conference. “Fashion is a powerful storytelling tool, and I want to use my designs to create awareness and inspire positive action.”
This collection marks an evolution in Banke’s journey as a designer. The deep blues and seafoam greens she uses to mirror the serenity and depth of the ocean, paired with fluid silhouettes reminiscent of the ocean’s movement, reflect her ability to merge fashion with advocacy seamlessly. Each piece in Oceans is a celebration of both African heritage and the delicate beauty of marine life.
