Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ is the highest-charting Afrobeats song on Billboard Hot 100
‘Calm Down’, a hit track by Rema, has made history as the highest-charting Afrobeats song on the Billboard Hot 100.
Billboard disclosed that ‘Calm Down’ clinched the number 6 spot on the chart, surpassing its previous position — number 7.
The song also extended its stay on the chart to 32 weeks.
The feat comes about a week after the song became the second-longest charting no 1 African song in India.
Calm Down’ was released in February 2022 as a single off ‘Rave and Roses’, Rema’s debut album. The singer later partnered with Selena Gomez, the US songstress, for the remix of the hit track in August of the same year.

Transcorp Acknowledges 5.52% Share Acquisition by Otedola.
Transnational Corporation (Transcorp) has announced the acquisition of a 5.5 per cent interest in the company by Nigeria’s businessman Femi Otedola.
Mr Otedola, who now holds 2.2 billion shares, comes next to UBA Nominees Limited in the ownership pecking order of the conglomerate, whose businesses encompass energy, oil and gas, and hospitality.
Mr Otedola is also the majority owner of Ajaokuta-based Geregu Power, formerly a government-owned facility with an installed capacity of 435MW.
Twitter Begins Removing Blue Checks from Users Who Don’t Pay.
After several false starts, Twitter began making good on its promise Thursday to remove the blue checks from accounts that don’t pay a monthly fee to keep them. Twitter had about 300,000 verified users under the original blue-check system — many of them journalists, athletes and public figures. The costs of keeping the marks range from $8 a month for individual web users to a starting price of $1,000 monthly to verify an organization, plus $50 monthly for each affiliate or employee account.
Dino Melaye Wins PDP Governorship Ticket in Kogi
Dino Melaye, a former senator, has been declared the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Kogi state. Melaye secured 313 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Idoko Ilonah, who got 124 votes. Melaye will face Ahmed Ododo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election scheduled for November 11.
Tiwa Savage escapes kidnap attack.
Tiwa Savage has confirmed escaping a security breach at her residence – widely reported online as a kidnap attempt.
The talented singer made the revelation on her Instagram handle via a statement signed by her management.
The statement reads: “Following recent reports online, we can confirm that on Thursday, April 13 2023, there was a major security breach at the residence of musician Tiwa Savage.
“A number of suspects were caught and are currently being held under investigation at Alagbon Police Station, Ikoyi.
Ms Savage and her family are safe and well.”
Mary Quant, the ’60s designer who invented the miniskirt, dead at 93
Mary Quant, the British fashion designer who popularized the miniskirt and shaped the 1960s “youthquake,” has died.
“She was one of the most internationally recognized fashion designers of the 20th century and an outstanding innovator of the Swinging ’60s,” her family said in a statement.
The fashion designer is credited with inventing the “mini” skirt — named after her favourite car, the Mini Cooper — hot pants and popularizing mod style in the ’60s.
AMVCA releases nomination list.
MultiChoice, the organizers of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), has announced the list of nominees for the 2023 edition.
The nominations were released with thirteen categories available for public voting. The event will hold on May 20, 2023, in Lagos State, Nigeria. The AMVCA has become important for recognizing outstanding African film and television achievements. This year’s Edition will feature several talented actors and actresses across Africa, all vying for awards in different categories.
